HVAC issues

Postby dpuckett » Thu Feb 27, 2014 11:16 pm

Not sure when it happened, but in he last couple months, when I push the button for the VENT or any AC function, its as if I push the OFF button on the climate controller in my 93 w250. Vent doors move, but the blower stops. Not a huge issue recently, because the HEAT and DEFROST still work just fine, but summer is just around the corner. Is there something simple I can check? Or is it likely time for a new controller piece? I have not checked anything yet, but wanted to get ideas first.

On a related note, my blower doesnt seem as strong as it was a few years ago. Getting 14 volts to the plug in at the blower motor. Could 20 years and 400k be the end of its life expectancy? Where can I get a new one? I know, parts store, but I have had crappy luck with any parts store electrical stuff the last few years..... I want to replace it once and be done.

Daniel, Ill take a look at my FSM and see how the wiring is ran on those controllers. As for the blower, not sure on that, might have to take it to a actual electric motor repair shop.

As bad as I hate to suggest it, AutoZone has those (had) vdo blower motors, seemed pretty good, never have replaced one yet.

The wiring is pretty simple,I think its in the controller if the power and ground is ok everywhere

Daniel, check what the voltage is when it's running, you may find that you only have 10 volts because the motor is drawing too hard.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

You might check the ground wire after that much time it may not be the best either.

UPDATE. I have lost ALL hvac functions. Disassembled the dash and looked at the control head, and the power wire going to it is burnt. Disassembled the control unit, reassembled and reinstalled. No change. That tells me I need a new one. Big question- where can I get one? I would really prefer a new one, as a used one will be 20+ years old. Only thing I have found online is from Dodge for $225. There has to be someone, somewhere that rebuilds these things, or makes a knockoff.

is it the blower switch that is bad or the actual control unit?

Got a used controller unit and installed it some time ago. Blower blows harder now- AC will keep me comfortable on a 95* day. It is nice to have the nice positive "notches" of the oem blower speed switch, too. Apparently, the years and miles, coupled with humidity of this area, were not kind to the original control assebly.
