IDLE CONTROL ISSUES??....1989 Power Ram 318 c.i.

Postby hokietiger » Sat Jul 26, 2014 11:40 am

Hi gang,

My 1989 Power Ram 5.2L, 318 c.i. auto trans 4x4 has IDLE CONTROL ISSUES...Its starts O.K when cold (slight surge then idles down to normal rpm) and idles normally until warmup...However, after warm up and stopping at traffic signals, etc. the idle surges and the engine may also stop. Then, it is difficult to restart.

Any advice??...Is it electrical ??

Also, what is the BEST spark plug to use for this truck??....I do not have a service manual yet but plan to get one asap.

Thanks so much!!!

I'm not familiar with much older than 92 in gas dodge trucks so I have to ask,is it carbureted or fuel injected?

Well, I started her up today and after a few minutes, it began the usual stuff of rough idling and near stalling before catching itself ( and sometimes completely stalling)...I viewed the fuel injector gas flow closely under a bright light and noticed a decrease in gas flow when it started to stall (almost appeared like it spit air instead of fuel at a decreased volume- but was probably low fuel volume).... Also, the injectors are making a continuous "girgling" sound.

Is it an injector issue or maybe a "fuel sending unit" issue in the gas tank??
