aftermarket cruise control on a 90??

Postby crossy » Fri Aug 29, 2014 10:50 pm

any possibility a universal cruise control will work on a 90 since it is the first year of running speedo electrically? am i right on that? 89 was the only year of mechanical i thought. anyway would like to put cruise on my 90 w/o changing the whole column. I can get the original type underhood stuff if that helps me? let me know , thanx , crossy

I would try and find an old after market, add on system from the 70's or 80's. Something that runs off vacuum, with a small remote cruise control panel, or stock, you can add to your dash or column.

I have been messing around with the electronic system on my crewcab and it still does not run right. I have got it now so it mostly works OK. Only accelerates slowly now, instead of full throttle acceleration. I have done every test in the FSM and it test out perfect. Replaced all the parts and components in the system...still the problem persists.

If I could figure out how to run a simple cable driven cruise control system, I would.

I had an aftermarket deal on my 91.0. It worked well.

The electronic servo style on gm's is standalone controller that works independently of any computers. Only requires power, ground, vss, brake, and the 3 switches(set, resume, cancel). The switches only require a 12v feed and when pressed just momentarily send 12v to the box to send a signal. The upside to this system is no vacuum required. Many aftermarket switches are compatable with the gm unit.

Whe youre at it, grab the control stalk. PO of my truck added this instead of the steering wheel controls. Take that, clockspring!

I forgot about that. If you have the older saginaw column, you can use a gm stalk. Or if you're handym you can graft the stalk on the newer column.

Thanks for the Pic...and that is hilarious because that is exactly how I was picturing mounting the GM control stalk on the 91.5-93 column!

So doing a bit of reverse researching from your picture, I think the GM style cruise we are looking for is from about 1986 to 1994. Seems most GM vehicles, cars, truck, vans, came with the same basic system.
