Instrument Cluster and dash lights problems

Postby cummins1992 » Sun Oct 26, 2014 7:33 pm

I have a 1992 D250 cummins that i have been having troubles with all of the dash lights. When i turn on the lights, my headlights and runnigns lights all work, but all of the lights inside the cab do not come on. All of the dash lights don't work. I have checked the fuses in the fuse panel, put a new light switch in the cab, and still nothing. I pulled out the gauge cluster and used a test light and found that I am not even getting any power to the lights. Anybody have any thoughts??

No power at the bulbs or cluster connection usually means fuse or switch, seeing as you've changed both out or checked them that must not be it.
Did you check for power at the fuse,or did you just look at it? The wiring, fuse boxes are not the best on our rigs,I'd test for power at the fuse with a test light with a test light.

Just for giggles.....did you twist the light switch knob any, wiggle it up and down? Even new switches can have loose contacts on the dimming coil.

Seen your other post.....check for a bad ground

I did check all of the fuse box fuses with a test light. Where do you think the ground would be at?

I've heard there's one thats bolted to the dash framework between the stereo and steering wheel, right around where the ashtray slides in. Several have issues there. I believe there's another but can't remember where it's located.
:edit: seems the wiring diagram says "right of steering column"
Another thing, flip that fuse box over and make sure that the fuse is transferring power to the wire. There could be an issue there.

The dash ground is located behind the cargo light switch. Also check the two bolts that are in each end of that metal dash support. All three cabs I have taken apart those two bolts were loose. There is no ground wires from that support brace to another part of the body.

There is a ground wire to the left of the light switch as well.

PROBLEM SOLVED! Turns out the power side of the fuse in the fuse box was loose. When I put the test light on it, the fuse got power through it, but when i took the test light off of it, their was no connection made. Lights all work!
