lighted ring around ignition

Postby 1992gen1_fan » Wed Nov 26, 2014 1:29 pm

Hello, the light ring around the ignition has never worked since I've had my truck. When I got the truck I noticed there was a piece under the dash getting super hot, I threw that piece away. I now understand that was the timer for that light around the key.

1- Is there a safer alternative to that timer to get that light working?

2- what model light bulb in that light ring? I know its a lot smaller than what's in the dash but had no number. Going to use an LED.

Thanks

I removed the OEM bulb from the Halo ring, and brought it down with me to the local parts house. I was able to match it up easily enough. Can't recall the number for it now.

As for the timer. Not sure if there is an alternative to this or not. But why not use the OEM unit. I know they get hot, but they don't pose any risk to your truck, or wiring system. And if you go with an LED light, that Halo ring will probably stay on for a long time.....since it's the draw of the bulb that depletes the energy that is stored up in the timer.

Good point about the led staying on longer, didn't think of that. I did find some LEDs that I bought on accident a long time ago, might try one just to see what it does.

I found a accessory time delay that might work. Its actually for turning off the dome light ect. Its programmable, I'll see if I can get it wired in in place of the factory time delay relay, maybe the LED won't effect this one.
