Key Switch in a 90 and voltage regulator issues

Postby 89dudney » Mon Dec 01, 2014 12:05 pm

Long story short, my keyswitch shorted out in my truck, fan quit working, all that good stuff. I rock the key back a little bit and it all kicks back on, but then it shorted enough to keep my starter engaged and burnt up my starter. I replaced my starter and now I start the truck with a toggle switch. How do I replace my key switch, I also suspect it to be the issue with my volt meter to ride at the very top side of the volt gauge. 8 \ | | | / 18 it rides dead center when at idle, but going down the road it rides at the second line to the left of 18. HELP!

If I think right, the '90 keys don't do crap. There's a rod that runs down the column and the actual switch is down there. Replace the unit and you oughta be good.

Your key tumbler could be worn. That will cause issues, BTDT recently. Also could be the switch down the column like Taco mentioned.
Your volt gauge sounds like it is doing well- if you make each mark 2 volts, then you are at 13 at idle, and 14 going down the road. Or is our "second mark from 18" not the same?

How do I go about replacing that switch at the end of the rod? I plan on replacing the tumbler as well. I got the key in the right spot yesterday and it charged right for a little while. Then I shut the truck off and restarted it and couldn't get it in the right spot again after that.

Been a while since I did one. Remove the plastic pane the fuze box sits on and swung the fuse box out of the way. Unplug the connector on the switch. The switch is held on by 3 small bolts that strip easily. Disconnecting the rod is the tricky part as it has a joggle in it. IIRC, you have to tilt the forward end of the switch up and slide the rod out. Assembly is reverse order. Once the switch is bolted on, you will need to slide it one way or the other to align it with the key.
