No start! Need help!

Postby Diesel!!! » Sun Dec 21, 2014 6:55 pm

Ok I'm relatively new to the cummins world so bear with me. Truck is a 92 d250(d is 2wd right?) mods are fuel pin and pump turned up and exhaust of course. Truck wouldn't shut off the other night so I pulled the wire to the fss but it still wouldn't shut off for a minute or 2. Tried to restart it and a small spark came from the grid heater solenoid relay thing then lost all power except to headlights. Figured how to Hotwire the truck to get home (at 2 in the morning) then the next day I did more researching and traces wires and fixed the fss by doing the sanding technique, but still no power when key is on, but when I run a hot wire to the fss everything works except when I shut it off I have to disconnect the wire. Fuses are all good replaced the relay. All the grounds are also good. Is there something that I am overlooking? It's my DD so I really need some help please, thanks in advance

Chech the fusible links on the drivers fender well. Looks like one huge wire splits into 5. You'll need to pull, hard,on them to see if they stretch. If one stretches,it's burnt.

Like is it just Normal wire? Cause where there should be a fusible link there's only wire.. There are only 2 fusible links that I see and they are the 2 larger black wires right off the battery..

The fusible links are special wire and should not be replace with regular wire as that could lead to a fire. The fusible link wire is available, but a lot of people opt to replace them with fuses.

Okay I got the fusible links replaces with inline fuses and now I can turn the key and the truck will crank but it won't start and after about three seconds of cranking it blows the fuse, what causes this?

What size of fuse did you use? Sounds like there is other underlying issues too...

This might help with the fuse size according to the link color.

If your fuses match up with the above diagram, then you have other problems for sure.
