headlight relays

Postby captmatthew1 » Mon Mar 30, 2015 11:03 am

Got my headlights on relays. Wow what a difference! I recommend everyone do this. My low beams are almost what my highbeams used to be!

Headlight relays are always a good idea, but if I may point out a few things...

1. You need a better, cleaner ground than that. Especially with the small black wire with no terminal.

2. Non-sealed connections won't keep out moisture, and using copper wire, they will begin to corrode in no time.

3. Mounting the relays like that is a sure fire way to get water intrusion. Rain water lands on that lip and will find it's way to the terminals. Put some Dielectric grease on the terminals for moisture resistance.

Just food for thought ;)

That ground was a quick test to verify a problem I was having (this was taken before the finished job.)

Relay mounting is temporary. I didn't have time before work to fabricate a mounting solution and the holes were already there. Lol.

Later this week I will be soldering all the connections and shrink tubing them.

Should have said this is a work in progress. Still some things that need finished, but its far improved from before.

When I did mine, I followed the sticky on DTR, and just used female spade terminal ends. Never really liked how open to the elements they are. I found threw Carquest the correct plug to the Bosch relays, and will be making the swap over when I can dig up some time.

But, at night, they are nice and bright, and I love the dual beam feature 8)

Did you upgrade the ground from the bulb to the core support? I cut the wire off and soldered a 12gauge wire on the terminal and ran it to the core support on each side.

Yes I did. I noticed the ground was marginal at best. Hilarious how small of a ground they put on there!

If you think they look good now, you should see the Hella H4 conversion with the relays installed. I highly recommend it. Worth every penny.
