Air Conditioner won't switch on?

Postby wilkyflex » Fri Apr 10, 2015 8:40 am

The air conditioning unit won't switch on.
What makes the compressor switch on when you push the AC button?
Does it have to have freon in it to switch on, or is it just a matter of voltage?
Are there fuses, switches, wires to check?
Thank you
Dean

Mine is the same way, evacuated it and recharged with r12 but the compressor clutch never engages.

Sorry I was away for a few days, My truck is a 92, approx 330k on it. I had problems with my old pcm that wouldn't kick on my grid heater. AC didn't work then. Put another cpm in and then the grid heater worked but still no AC. I will run a hot wire to it to see if it will even engage then. Not sure what to do after that other than trace wires...

mine is a 92 D-250. I unplugged the power cord to the compressor and put a voltmeter on the cord to the compressor. I would think that when you press the AC button, you get 12 v, but I got nothing.
I'm trying to figure out if my old compressor is still good. The AC guy said I needed a new compressor. But the compressor never turned on.

I can't figure out why I'm not getting power to the compressor.

Your ac compressor is controlled/turned on by the computer once it sees engine rpm from the crank sensor. Follow the dark blue with yellow tracer wire to the low pressure switch and go from there.
