Headlight bulbs keep going bad

Postby 762frmafr » Mon Apr 13, 2015 6:00 am

I can't seem to keep headlight bulbs in my truck. I replace them and a few days later they are burned out. I just installed 19.5" wheels and 14 ply tires and live 5 miles down a dirt road. I am thinking they are vibrating too much. Anyone else have a similar problem?

The only way I could see them being vibrated around too much is if one or more of the adjustment screws is broken. Otherwise, they're held solid in the buckets.

I suspect they're getting too much voltage. Those bulbs will burn out quick if they see more than 15v for any amount of time. My sealed beams would burn up fast every time a voltage regulator would die.

Check your alternator voltage with a meter while it's running. It should read around 14.5 with the motor running and everything off, slightly lower with headlights/radio/accessories on.

Probably wouldn't hurt to tie into the ground wire and add an additional ground to the rad support. I have about 7 spare bulbs in my shed, I haven't had a single bulb burn out on my dodge rams in probably 10 years.
