Voltage dropping

Postby centex 1stgen » Mon Apr 27, 2015 12:56 pm

My truck was down for about two weeks for having the pump resealed. Everything worked perfectly when I parked it. When I got it running again the truck wouldn't charge. I put a voltage regulator on it and then it would only charge when you gave it throttle. I put a new alternator on it and now it will charge but when you put it in gear and idle it drops down to 12v and then comes back up with throttle. The truck is a 1991.5. What the heck is going on

Drive it for a while to get the battery good and charged, if that doesn't work I'd get your battery tested

Sounds to me like you may have a connection issue between your regulator and the alternator, or a grounding issue.

I had problems with voltage regulators dying on me, so I eventually gave up and switched to a single-wire alternator (I highly recommend it).
