Cruise control

Postby Ryker Carruthers » Fri May 01, 2015 7:17 am

Okay so here a few months ago I decided to try to get my cruise to work, the clock spring was worn out so I traced the wires to the dash and put a toggle switch for the set, so to set cruise flip it on, then off. It will hold the speed on flat ground, and give it throttle to maintain speed up hill. But as you reach the top of the hill it will not let out of the throttle, it will keep gaining and not come down until you cancel. Any ideas?

Sounds like a valve is sticking open. Find an FSM to troubleshoot it or find another actuator. They are almost all the same for those years, from a van, truck, or whatever. You may need to change the cable over though.

This is what mine does as well. I have swapped on several different servo's...no change. Swapped steering wheel switches...no change. Swapped brake light switches...no change. Done every test the FSM says to do (twice)...everything tests perfectly. No idea why it won't work properly.

I forgot to mention the other weird thing it does, I took off my steering wheel buttons awhile back, put the cruise control switches on toggles. My clock spring was gonzo. But occasionally when I do play with the cruise, to set flip the set toggle to on then back off, sometimes it will mat the pedal right away and she goes. Scared the sthi out of me the first time it happened. Does that info help at all?

Mine hits hard too, when I hit the "set" or " resume" buttons it will mat the throttle for a second or 2 and then settle back as it gets control.
Ryker, are you using momentary switches?

No Pete I am not, So for set you have to flip on then off. It was a late night deal i wanted it to drive to illinois but still didn't work in the end.

Go to the help aisle at the parts store and get a gm cruise stalk. Wire it up instead of toggles. Done.

Been thinking of doing that as well. At least if the problem persists after that I know it's not the switches, or the clock spring.

Mine was intermittent as well. Some times did the rabbit launch runaway, sometimes never stabilize speed, sometimes not disengage or very slowly disengage, sometimes not work at all or work perfectly.
How I fixed it? Removed the battery, remove the cover from the PCM plug, pushed each socket onto the PCM pin, reinstalled cover, reinstalled battery. Not only got my cruise control back, I also got my TPS OD control back.

The cruise control in the 91.5-93 trucks can be taught how to act. There is actually a procedure to re-learn it to work how you want it to. If you set it and take your foot off the accelerator, it will catch itself and hit the trottle. You can get it to not do that anymore if you reset it. I'll dig around and see what I can come up with. For some reason I am thinking its in the FSM for some reason.
