Fuel Gauge no worky

Postby IRoss » Sat Dec 15, 2007 5:47 pm

hello again all..so today after an extended 4by misson (needless to say the engine was Warm, running on the hash mark past midpoint), my fuel gauge quit reading...until I mash on the pedal, that is, and then it registers a little above E.....any suggestions before I crawl under'dere and start yanking wires? I have the haynes but they dont have the diesel wiring diagram..(note:beating on the dash does not semm to fix problem ;-) thanx, t

try adding a few more gallon of fuel and see what happen
You may have a dead spot in you sending unit(on the tank module)

adding fuel will raise it above that spot.

I have seen floats, floating in the fuel, unattached to the sending units

could be the conector is about ready to fall off?

Some one siphoned your tank while you weren't looking :D

The gauge worked surprisingly accurately since I've had the truck, this is the first time I've had a problem of this nature...the tank was just filled up when the gauge stopped registering, and now its totally dead, and like I said before, when the engine is under load, going uphill, the needle will move a bit....do I need to drop the tank to check ot the sender? Will an excess of transfer case fluid be a possible fouling agent to the wires on the outside of the tank sender? thanks, t

My gauge stopped working like that a little while ago. It ended up that there was carrotion on the back of the gauge cluster where the conector plugged in. I took one out of my other trucks and put it in and it worked fine. My oil pressure gauge was not working at the same time.

I have checked the connections at both ends, all is good, and now it appears that the gauge will work for the first 1/4 tank, and then drop dead...so would everybody agree all signs point to the sender? I have a 7" holesaw I am going to cut a hole in the bed with...will this be big enough to pull the sender out with? ( I will probably do this sooner than later if my low fuel light doesn't work either, i dont know yet)
thanx ian

 :hs: your joking right, you must relly hate you bed, why dont you just take the two bolts off the straps and drop the tank, while you at it you should put a 1/2inch pickup lines in save you from doing it twice

i know its a ittle brutal, yeah, but i'm going to fab some sort of trick cover so's I can get back in there to do the biglines when its gets warm....due the fact that i dont have a flat dry space to drain&drop , and need the truck, and my mileage right now is so inconsistant due to loads & 4x4, i need something kinda quick $ ez....beside she's got a checketplate liner. ;-)

...so's anybody seen this, will a 7"hole work?

7 inch is gonna be close. I'd measure mine for ya, but it's under a tarp and buried in snow.

I got it. I was out shoveling anyways and stuck my head up under the tarp. It's 6.5 inches at the nut. You want to make sure you are pretty close to center, the unit is a long tube, and has to come straight up to come out. ;-)

Right on, that's kinda the diameter I got from my rough measurements...one step closer to biglines....anybody know if can just buy the potentiometer or do I have to buy the whole sending unit?

my guage stopped working to. i just refueled at 400kms. but me low fuel
light still works. i didnt even know there was one on these trucks. but
there might just be corrosion on the connecter behind the dash. i might
have to check that out. it started dying when i first bought the truck. it
would bounce around and never keep a steady measurment. i just
thought the float was pooched.
