Headlight switch replacement?

Postby Douglas » Mon Aug 03, 2015 3:15 pm

I think I need to replace my headlight switch in my 1990. Brake and turn signal work, but no running or headlights( the important bits IMO ).

How does that handle come out? I found the button at the bottom of the switch, but I can't get the handle out. Twist is some way? to one stop or the other? flat in some particular position? My finger tip gets a dent in it from pushing the release button and I still can't figure this out.

Any help most greatly appreciated.
cheers,
Douglas

No real easy way, I've always found I've had to kinda wiggle it back and forth rotationally (clockwise/counter clockwise) for it to release.

Pull the lights on, push the button, then pull shaft out.
pete

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

OK, the push and wiggle did work. New switch in, and still no head lights/running lights or instrument lights.

Looked at the wiring diagram, and checked fuses in the box. All fuses healthy. turn signals work, so I am ruling out the main fusible link feeding that part of the tree. Am going to probe it with my DMM and see where I have voltage and where I don't.

Any likely suspects to examine?

alright...is fixed. It was not the fusible link, it was the wire just downstream of it...green powder was all that was left of the Cu at the end. Diagnosed by checking everything on that circuit at the fuse box with DMM. Measure voltage, pull headlight switch to ON and voltage goes away. Was just like a fusible link failure I s'pose but when I cut out the bad part I brought the end of the link into contact( strrrretch) and the lights came on. No bad link.
