Headlight Upgrade

Postby matthewh » Fri Oct 16, 2015 8:30 pm

What sort of upgrade is there for our 2B1 series headlights, in terms of durability? I run Wagner brand lights, mainly cause that's what the parts store carries. I like the light brightness, though low beam could be a touch brighter, but I go threw 4-6 lights a year, and typically the trucks parked threw the winter.
I have the headlight circuit on the "Jim Lane" relay setup, with the dual beam option. Typically the low beam is what burns out, sometimes I can tap the light and they'll pop back in, but don't last much after that.
This is the 3rd 1st Gen I've owned, however the first dually, and the others never used bulbs like this. Any thoughts or ideas?

I have been running the sylvania silver stars.....but I'm swapping to the lens/housings that convert to an h4 bulb. Mainly because I can buy brighter/more watt bulbs for them. :edit: I've been eyeing some led replacement h4 bulbs as well. They're expensive as hell too.

If your running both beams at the same time your probably over heating the elements and burning the low beam out.

Would it be a quality issue or just a design flaw that they cant take the constant burn? I've thought about the led replacements, but the look kinda turns me off, and the led's dont seem to have that extended range like the old style do, idk, maybe it was cheap led's I experienced.

Ive run the conversion housings for 10yrs or better. Just like bulbs, theres good and not so good. My favoritebwas the hella housings and 9003 silverstars. Really good output. Then i tried hid and love them. They work really well in the hella housings. I reccommend ddm tuning because theyre backed by a lifetime warranty. Only downside is when i needa replacement part it get slowboated from china :(

Trucklite makes a complete LED replacement light for our trucks. Bad news is it's about $180 each. Somebody on here has them and I saw the pic of his truck. I was going to put them in but decided that I could live with my relays and factory lights when I saw the price.

No,not those ugly multiple dot things! These are the replacements for H4 cartridge type housings. I'll find a link to them.

I have been using the Hella housings and their H4 100/55 watt bulbs for years. Haven't burned out a bulb yet. Had to replace a housing and bulb once due to a crash. Amazon carries them, also the local Batteries and Bulbs store. Wish they made them in a 9004 and 9007.

Actually, those where the first ones I bought back in the early 90's. Got tired of people flashing their brights at me so I went to the 100/55.

www.ddmtuning.com for the hid. I went with 35w 6000k with the high/low option and absolutely love them.
The housings i bought thru advance when i used to work there. They were considerably more expensive than the stuff you can find on ebay now but i feel they are alot better quality as well after using both

Btw youll need to trim the hole in the back of your headlight bucket to a full circle to get these to fit. Nothing a dremel wont make short work out of. That said, im not sure those led bulbs you linked will fit with that extra garbage on the back of them. Id try the silverstars off the shelf at the parts store. I was very happy with them. Until i tried hid that is.

With the new fancy hid bulbs or the H4's, do I have to do anything to the wiring, any add ons for them to work? Or is that all part of the pkg when you order?

If it's h4 type bulb connections....no. They are the same as our sealed beams.
