Common grounding or other reason for gauges misbehaving?

Postby 888 » Tue Nov 03, 2015 6:54 am

I'm headed down to Tennessee soon to pick up a 92 D350 5 speed truck and drive it back to SW ohio. My wife's cousin lives nearby and works for a repair shop so he gave it a test drive and a once over for me already. It's 5 hours home including a trip over Jellico on 75 on the Tennessee/Kentucky border and other than the fuel gauge (I believe), the gauges are randomly working or not working. For example, the oil pressure gauge works occasionally. Is there anything in particular to look at that would cause this, something like a common ground for the instrument panel? The light on the dash when the door is open works okay, for whatever that is worth. I'd sure rather have gauges for the drive home, going over that mountain. Seems that I've always had to replace the oil pressure sending unit in every truck I've owned but all the gauges are acting up.

thanks in advance.

I'd say pull the cluster out and look at the condition of the plugs on the back side. Make sure the ground is good, and the printed board is ok.
