truck won't stop cranking

Postby mperryb » Thu Dec 17, 2015 9:09 pm

Hey all I have 92 with a funky electrical issue. The truck starts cranking with the key in the run position. I replaced the ignition switch, no change. Seems like a short somewhere. Anybody ever have this issue?

My dads old 97 did this a couple times. For whatever reason, the trick to making it stop was using the parking brake. Stupid round trucks...

the contacts could be stuck on the starter solenoid or the starter
un bolt/ remove the wire ( on the starter solenoid) going to the starter, turn key to run position
put a test light on that terminal
if it lights
that starter solenoid could be bad
if no light
a quick test next is * truck in park / or neutral
touch the starter wire to the same terminal
if it tries to start, contacts in the starter are bad > a easy repair

How about the starter circuit relay? Did you try unplugging it? Rockauto.com has them:

I vote this.

Remove the starter and pull the contacts and plunger out. File down the Pitts and reinstall or replace with new.
Decades of carbon dust, grit and grime can cause them to stick.

Ok I misspoke the truck does not have a new solenoid but it has a new RELAY and a new ignition switch.

The truck starts cranking in the key position before the start position.

So my problem is
Key off=engine off
Key on=starter engaged, truck fires up immediately and starter stays engaged.
Start=no change starter still engaged.

If i put a test light on the solenoid and put the key to the run position the test light illuminates. (makes sense, the truck fires up in the run position)
If I leave the test light on and put the key to the START position, I get no change. Test light stays illuminated.

Unplug the relay and turn the key on. If it turns over, you have wires shorted together after the relay, if not, then check to see what wires have power at the relay. Without looking at a schematic my guess is only 1 wire should have power until the key is turned to start, then a 2nd one should be hot. If only 1 has power and you plug in the relay and it turns over, the relay is shorted inside making contact all the time. If 2 have power then you need to follow it back and see if you have wires shorted between the ignition switch and relay or the switch is shorted inside.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

OK I got ya. I have pulled the relay and the truck won't start at all. I have double checked that my relay works well. Ill get the test light out and do that test tomorrow. I have tried looking up some wiring diagrams but haven't found any that is legible online yet.

Problem fixed.

I didn't mess with chasing down any shorts. A wire shorting to power seems like its far less common than a wire shorting to ground anyway.

What I did (recommended by a friend) was pull the ecm plug and clean the connections with some wd40 and a pipe cleaner. Put it back together and the problem went away, for now.

Time will tell if it fixes it for good.
