91 - 93 odometer/speedometer correlation

Postby spencerdiesel » Sat Jan 16, 2016 8:51 am

I've been to several threads on fixing the non working odo, but haven't seen quite what I was looking for. My odometer worked on and off for about a year, then 4 months ago it completely stopped.

Also, from time to time (maybe twice a month) my speedometer does not move. It has ONLY happened once the truck has been stopped/shut off and I start it again. Most times after I get over about 20, the needle jumps up and works like it should. On a few occasions, I drove for a few miles @ 50 mph and it didn't work until 5 miles down the road. It's hit and miss.

So what I was wondering was; will the new nylon gears fix my odometer issue as well as my speedometer? Or only fix the odometer?

Gears will only fix the ODO. The speedo has other issues.

does the truck have CC and does it work?

(cruise control)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

If cruise doesn't work either then it's more likely a VSS problem.

Read a great thread with info from Mark Nixon and it helped my understanding (painfully weak knowledge in electrical). Where could a correct VSS be found these days? Any OE stuff floating or has it all been gotten?

Speedometer is starting to act up more, when it works it works correct. But today it would quit when I took off from a stop, and then after a min or so would jump up and work fine. Did it three times, when before it would ONLY not work after the truck started, then worked correct until shutting the truck off.

Another question, If my speedometer quit completely but I put new gears in for the odo, would the odo work?

Before you buy odometer gears, make sure you have the 90-92 style speedometer. I had a late 92 (June build, IIRC) with a CPL 1579 engine that had the 93 style odometer- the digits were closer together.

Thanks dpuckett, my odo numbers are spaced a little more
