alternator wire identification-

Postby jethro » Sun Jan 31, 2016 10:42 pm

I am about to try to wire my external regulator(dodge) onto the dodge alternator on the cummins. (Fummins )
The schematic shows a ground wire and a "output" wire going to battery (containing a fuseable link at some point in the run)
On the alternator I see 2 fat cables and a small blue and green. One of the fat ones has a ring eye and the other had a
plastic plug-together device. I am guessing that the ring eye one is ground and the plug-in one goes to the battery.
Does this sound correct ???? ( I got a plug with the regulator that has a blue and green- so that explains those two ----)
also- the regulator appears that there should be a spring steel retention device which locks the plug into the regulator via.
the 2 ear tabs on regulator........ does the dodge use something like this to keep the plug from working off ??????

Thanks--- tim

If you want to use the Ford regulator use his link.

I do not like the Dodge electronic regulators. I have thrown away to many of them when I was playing with Dodge cars.

Thanks Philip- I will look at that link----
I have all ready bought the dodge one- I had read accounts that using the ford reg with the dodge alt lead to eratic voltages-
so I went with the dodge one. Its just a big transistor I think so I don't really see how they could be too different electricly (?)
I will try the dodge one first since I have it all ready.............

A regulator doesn't care what alt it is hooked to. All it is doing is control alt fields. That Ford regulator gives you options the Dodge model does not. That Ford regulator is a relay type. Remove the cap and there are three adjustments inside it. You can adjust turn on voltage, turn off voltage, total amperage it can produce.

The Dodge model has a long track record of being unreliable. The after market regulators are worse than a Dodge original model is.

Going to remember this one. I have had 2 in my 92 since conversion 2 years back and have lost one in my 89. My 92 has the voltage spike thing going on now. Its a 2 volt or better up and down cycle at a fast rate. It seems to be worse at an idle. couple times a second headlights dim, bright, dim ,bright. Drives me crazy.

The Ford regulators didn't change much for many years. From 70 to almost 90 they used the same one.

another one to look at is an older Dodge relay type regulator. Those are Pre1968. Those only used a single key on wire for supply. The other wire went to one of the alt field terminals. The other field terminal was grounded when used on a double field alt. The alt that used these regulator was a single field alt.

To add a little more info. The pre 72 chevy regulators can be used also. You can find then in 2/3/4 wire configuration. The terminals are marked A/B/C/D. A terminal is 12 volt switched power. B terminal goes to one field wire. C terminal is for a charging light on the dash board. D terminal I can't remember what it was used for. For a conversion you wouldn't be using it anyway.

You would need to ground the second field terminal on the alt.

I had a senior moment Philip, back when I was going to do my 92 conversion off from the dead computer you had mentioned for me to use the ford regulator when I had called you. I had already bought the KTELL Ronco dodge crappo regulator so I went with that.
