Alternator wiring

Postby Corn_Fed_Cummins » Sun May 15, 2016 3:46 pm

Alrighty then boys and girls! I'm new to the 12v world and I have a quick question. I've searched like crazy through the threads and have yet to find an answer to my question. I've got a 91 D250. When I acquired the truck there was no alternator. So my question is, what wires connect to the back of the alternator? I know the big stud is for the cable that goes to the battery. But what are the other two small lugs for? Do they go to the voltage regulator? If so, in what orientation? Or is the orientation even relevant? Please help, I'm looking forward to progressing with this truck but in kind of at a stand still right now. Thanks in advance!

Awesome! That's definitely a start, by chance can you help me decipher what it means though? Lol I'm wondering what is supposed to be on the other side of the pig tail coming off of the voltage regulator.

Ok, lets start at the external regulator. 14ga DB (dark blue) going in, and 18ga DG (dark green) coming out, heads towards the alternator through the main right side loom along the inner fender. That six terminal connector is down low, by the air conditioning compressor (if yours has it). That 18ga DG hooks to terminal R3 on the back of the alternator. The other wire that should be apart of that six terminal connector is a 14ga DB, but not the one that went directly to the voltage regulator, but that one will go to the J2 terminal on the alternator. The other two leads are the 6ga ground wire coming from the R9 terminal to the engine block and the other 6ga black wire coming from the R6 terminal that heads towards the battery.

Here is a picture (old) of that connector. It has other wires in it for the air conditioning...

In that picture, along the top row, the far right (18ga DG) and the center (18ga DB) are the two wires that you need for the alternator. Also in that picture is the 6ga black wire that heads (albeit the long way) to the battery. Those wires are a little deceiving, as they have fairly thick insulation on them, about the size of 12-14ga wire, but they are 18ga. The brown wire and the "brighter" blue wire are for the air conditioning compressor.

You're the man! That was the type of answer I was looking for lol! I really appreciate the help! I'm going to start another thread for the starter, I'm having the same issue with it. If you can, I'd really appreciate your help! Thanks a million! :D

Ike, why does that look like my paint color?

edit,
I know why! It's the air intake tube isn't it?

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.
