Please help asap, no power after jump startining another car

Postby liftarc » Thu Aug 17, 2017 6:51 pm

So I was in the parking lot after work, some of the plant employees asked if I could jump a guys late model Jetta.

First set of jumpers from plant maintenance seemed bad. My battery terminals showed 17.79 volts, Jetta battery showed 9.45 volts.

Tried another set of cables and my batter showed 13.89 volts, his showed 12.45 volts. He started his car, said thanks and away they all went.

I drove back to my parking spot and turned the truck off. Now when I turn the key on I have nothing. No dash lights, no cranking, no clicking.

Dome light comes on very dimly, temp and oil pressure gauges are pegged all the way up.

I'm stranded 3.5hrs from home till I figure this out.

Fusible links look on, no visible burns. Fuses are good. Wtf?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Tug on those fuse links fairly hard. You have one burnt, you will feel one stretch

After looking over the fsm wiring diagrams I'm sure the problem has to be one or both of the 20g orange fusible links powering the 12g pink/black and 12g red wires that feed power through ignition run and start. I still have power in acc and have been able to charge my phone. Brake lights work too.

My plan to get home is to bypass the fusible links on those wires and run straight from battery positive through circuit breakers to the red and pink/black wires.

What amperage of circuit breakers should I use?

Bypassing fusible links with 40a circuit breakers didn't work. No change at all. Snipped fusible link ends show full battery voltage on the multi meter. I jumped power to fuel solenoid and electric lift pump through a shared 15a inline fuse, and by jumping the pink and brown starter wires I'm able to get it running. I'll be driving 3.5hrs to get home in a few min...... Yes I have a fire extinguisher handy....

If those links are good then the ignition switch (electrical part) must be messed up. If memory serves right,a few of those are direct feed for the switch.

I just realized I never came back with the solution...

I got it home, battery was too drained to restart.

I also suspected the ignition switch, so a few min with a multimeter and sure enough it was receiving current but not sending. I removed the switch and heard an unusual click as I pulled it off the column. I say unusual because this is maybe the 5th time I've replaced one of these and never heard that click noise.

I rechecked with multimeter off the truck to verify and it had continuity again. So I reinstalled and everything worked fine.

I replaced my battery and ground cable since they were overdue. I also have a spare electrical side of the ignition switch in my toolbox now.

Thank you ellis93 for your help.
