Batt. smoke, no dash lights, no start

Postby spencerdiesel » Wed Sep 06, 2017 7:54 pm

Well I just thought I was going to drive the dodge unit today.....Hit the key, starter turned two revolutions and stopped. smoke started coming from the drivers side. Popped hood and looked like the hot side was....hot.

I just disconnected the negative and rode the toyota to work.

This evening I cautiously reconnected the negative to get an idea of the problem, and there are no signs of power inside the truck other than the interior light which works fine, and my pyrometer.

Does anyone have recommendations?

Start checking the fusible links, sounds like 1 burned up.

Pete, you're the man. The little orange 20 (or 22?) gauge fusible link was fried. Temporarily wire tied it back (fusible link, not straight wire) and Genny is back!

I was starting to withdrawal pretty bad

No problem man! Sometimes the simple things.......
I've done what you did too, just twist it back so you can use the truck and fix it later. lol

I'm just glad I know what the problem is now. Because the same link fried again lol. Running out of usable fusible link, would it be much trouble to change over to a fuse block?

I'm afraid to pay someone else to do electrical work, but I just don't have much time combined with my lack of electrical skills.

What do most guys do with this mess?

Yes, you can change it for a fuse, just cut the link back, then put in an inline fuse holder coming from a hot source. If that keeps blowing, you may have a problem. Or it may just be a 25 year old fusible link. Someplace on here is a chart showing what approximate fuse rating each link is.

Found the post on it, check this out, viewtopic.php?f=30&t=8411&p=60721&hilit=fuse+chart#p60721

Spliced in a single fuse holder with a 30 amp fuse. I figured airing on the 30 side instead of 40 would make it so the fuse fries before the link
