I had a fuel gauge get all twitchy....jumping all over the place. Tried cleaning the connection at the fuel tank....no change, checked the fuse panel for any blown fuses....all good, rechecked the ground on the dash, again no change, then pulled the gauge cluster and replaced the fuel gauge in the cluster....that got it working again.

The ground went on mine once. Ran a new ground from the sender to the frame. I think the fuel gauge sender is grounded somewhere in the rear light wire harness.

Sometimes the contacts on the actual sending unit level get all cruded up over the years.

I have pulled the sending unit out of the tank and used a cloth with some brake cleaner to polish up the contacts as well as bent the contact that 'travels to help it make better connection to the 'range' contact.
