I lost the pcm years ago in the 92 and have been on the old school regulators. I did the very last fix I had not done to date to fix the voltage fluctuations. I bought a brand new mopar regulator. Same thing. I have a neg wire from battery to regulator case, I also have the regulator fed through a relay that pulls its power right from the battery. Whats left? Im at a loss. My 93 has a dead pcm now too, and I am afraid when I convert that one it will do the same thing.

Where the ground wire is mounted on the regulator, did you remove the paint from the regulator?

Did you run new wires to the alt?

I did, took a file to it to bare metal. The wiring to the alternator ( 2 small ones ) are new. I did not replace the bigger output wire. I remember talking to you about putting a ford regulator on it. I was hoping the good factory mopar unit would fix it. Guess I should have tried a ford regulator. It is very noticeable with the head lights on at night. You can actually hear the load on the engine fluctuate with the charging fluctuation.

A lot of the time the mopar regulator helps. Myself I have hated those regulators sense they came out. I prefer the old style regulators.

I'll tell you another one to try. pre 67 Dodge. It is a two wire hookup. It needs a good power feed. One wire to ALT. Ground the second field terminal on the ALT.

I'll call you later on this evening.

I can try that one. I just bought 2 of the pricey mopar ones. Boo Hiss. O well, the 89 takes them too. Never had a fluctuation with that truck. I had one go bad and blow the caps off the battery, and blow all my lights. She was charging chernobyl style.

Philip, I used the truck today to haul equipment and this reg is better then the cheap parts store one. It does pulse, but not as severe. I had a quick peek at the wiring, its been a few years since I set it up. I am not sure what I have is the best. It looks like I re used the harness that hooks to the alt, and has a plug right by the air intake. I ran new wires from there. Maybe I should take the time and hard wire the regulator with some new wires directly to the alt, regulator, and battery. Exactly where does each wire go? The fields that is. I would like to double check what I have to make sure it is correctly wired.

If your using the factory wiring to the ALT. There is a plug in that harness down by the right side frame rail. Open that plug and check it for corrosion. If your inner fender well doesn't have the rubber splash guard. That plug is in a direct spray path from the front tire.

Yes, the plug is where I tapped into the field wires. Philip, do you have a simple wire plan I can follow to redo this thing from scratch? What gauge wire should they be?

I ripped all the wiring off the alternator, and the whole regulator mess. I put new 0 gauge from the alt to the battery, put new 14 gauge wire to the regulator, moved the regulator to right next to the relay and battery. Its fine now. Must have had a bad wire or dirty connection somewhere. I ran a ground from the battery to the regulator, and the ignition circuit is run through a relay for good stable power source. Thanks for the phone call Philip.

At least it gave me courage to convert the 93. I will get that done this spring so I might be able to drive that one. First time in 3 years for that truck,,,,,,,, if I get it fixed. I will also have to get 2 magnetic tach pick up assemblies the 92 and 3 get the signal from the now dead pcm's :x
