trailer wiring

Postby DTanklage » Sun Jan 20, 2008 5:42 pm

"please dont chew me out but this question is in regards to my '97

no wonder the plug for the trailer wont do anything but the brakes and running lites....there are only 2 wires connected up under rr of truck (lol)

anything i should be concerned with when hooking this thing up?

do i need to buy one of those boxes for tying it in?

do i need to install relays?

can the 2nd gen system handle the extra current of a rather large trailer with the double tail lights (mounted both high n low)?

thanks in adv (wiring is not my strong suit)"

so, the wires that are not connected to anything go to a second plug that is in the bed (5th wheel plug)

the ones under the rr of truck that go to the 7 pin deal i will be using are all still intact

one of the two connectors was not all the way together and the terminals inside both of the connectors have some corrosion

i am gonna delete the connectors, and the scotchlocks that are on those wires, hook everything up directly, no plugs, and give it another try

still open to any other suggestions

You could buy the T tap things. Unplug the wires, plug in the "T", run the wires to the 7 pin.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

just got back from the shop where my trailer is

everything works!

it was pretty simple really...

esp when compared to my 1st gen

the factory had the 7 wires coming out of the harness. but the plugs were too corroded for good contact. i guess. did away with the plugs and spliced it all together nice and it works great. makes me wonder about the other plugs for other electrical tho... :(

thanks tho pete, appreciate the input

The switch relay is in the dash if it has one, not back by the hitch.

You can probably stand on your head and look up from the bottom with a flash light and see it.
