Got freaked out this morning

Postby GO OVRIT » Mon Mar 03, 2008 9:00 pm

Saturday night I noticed some strange guage readings. So yesterday I checked around and had a ground wire broken in the plastic cover of a crimp on eyelet. I fixed that and everything was good. This morning I started off to work and about 1/4 mile down my gravel road I hear several pops followed by smoke rolling out from under the dash. Everything inside the cab goes dead and the alt quits charging. I turn around and pull back up to the garage and start looking. I pulled half the dash apart and didn't find any burnt wires. Come to find out a screw came out inside the cd player and shorted it out. After replacing a fusible link under the hood, I went to work with 1/2 the dash and no tunes.

At least the fuse link worked properly. Glad you were in it to. If that would have happened when no one was around and someone had straight wired that fuse link you would have lost the truck. :(

The fuse at the CD-player should have popped before a fusible-link.

I would be investigating that point first.

It could be one of those dime-a-dozen discount-store fuses that won't blow; they just get hot and melt the plastic.

Use ONLY BUSS fuses.

It did blow the fuse on the back of the cd player, but only after it popped 4 or 5 times. I can't really exlplain why it and the link blew? As far as the fuse brand...its whatever Kenwood put in it at the factory. I threw an Alpine I had in there and no problems...other than figuring out how to get my Waylon Jennings cd back/
