I can't answer your question in exact amps required; but, it can't require very much.

If it did, the flimsy key-switch would soon melt-down.

Just about any decent toggle-switch should carry it fine.

Shutoff Solenoid = Dumb

Postby Ace » Mon May 19, 2008 6:42 am

That fuel shutoff solenoid is nothing but a problem waiting to happen. It's a luxury convenience designed to make the engine shut off with the ignition (duh) switch like a gasser. Gut it, install a pull cable and be done with it. Even then, it can leak. I went all the way and not only gutted it, but drilled it out, tapped it and turned the dumb thing into a solid plug.

So fuel solonoid could be what stops a truck from getting fuel when cranking? When a truck will just turn over and over and over and seems like its getting no fuel?

Yes, a faulty fuel solenoid circuit is the main cause of no-starts on the 1st gen Cummins. It's also a common source of stalls.

That said, I wouldn't go out of my way to rip it out. It's worth having for emergency shut down reasons at the minimum. If it was acting up I'd take it out.

mine won't start right now...it will crank and crank and crank with no fire. Seems like its not getting any fuel that's why I asked. Even with a healthy dose of Ether it pops off on the ether but never keeps running after the spray is burnt.

Where on the pump is this solonoid? can I bypass it?

No, just remove the plunger and small spring that goes inside of it. Screw the solenoid itself back in. Make sure the o-ring is on the end, that's the seal.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.
