Factory Tach On A '91.5

Postby peobryant » Wed Sep 10, 2008 7:47 pm

Does anybody know if a factory tach will work on '91.5 intercooled Cummins? I know they don't just plug right in, but I have been told that people have even put the tachs in non I/C trucks, so does anybody know how I would get on to work on my truck?

Your going to need to install a sensor to trigger the tach. The 91.5"s didn't have a crank position sensor.

If you use a stock tach you will need it to be a 5 volt signal also.

If you go with an after market tach then it would need a 12 volt signal. Going with the 12 volt signal would let you use any auto tach.

Is it possible to install a crank position sensor on my truck? What would I have to do? I realize it would probably be easier to use an aftermarket one, but I love the look of the factory ones.

Thanks

You could install a crank sensor. You would need a sensor. An aftermarket magnetic type would be your best choice. Then glue a couple of magnets to the harmonic balencer. Then you could tap into the 5 volt circuit from the PCM. All your gages use 5 volts for their power source.

yes, it is entirely possible. my 91.0 (still kicking myself for getting rid of this one) had one in it when i got it. it had the crank position sensor and everything.

Where would get a crank position sensor? Also, I'm not eletrically inclined, so how hard would one be to install?

Thanks again,
Parker

Don't you also need a different balencer. My 93 has a square recessed chunk missing. My 89 does not.

I thought you guys were talking about putting a factory unit on.

I want to put on a factory tach, but still need more info.

I know Isspro makes sensors, but will they work for the factory tach?

Well it works in reverse. A isspro will work off a factory tach harness. So maybe it will work that way also. I would call isspro and ask for a tech guy. They have always been good to me and have gone out of there way to help me.
