Where to get starter rebuild parts?

Postby dpuckett » Thu Nov 13, 2008 8:40 pm

The starter in my W350 has gotten to the point I have to keep a rubber mallet behind the seat for times that I turn the key and the starter wont engage. I know it is going to just die on my one day, and even the mallet wont help (BTDT in my 91). I'd prefer to rebuild it myself, as I have more time than money right now (though I do have a local rebuilder who does great work), and curiosity has gotten the better of me. But, where can I get EVERYTHING I need- brushes, contacts, bearings (it does have bearings, right?), etc? I basically want complete rebuild kit (the thing weighs half a ton), and want to go HD. Girlfriend was going to take it out while I was away at school (I had the Dakota), til I told her it weighed like 60#.

I used to sell auto parts and for some starters we listed brushes, bushings, and starter drives. I used to sell them once and a while. Try NAPA and see if they have listings. I remember at least on a chevy small block starter it was almost as cheap to buy a reman as it was to rebuild one yourself. Brushes and bushings are cheap but the starter drive is not.

I'll have to look into starter drive prices. Parts store junk is out of the question- Mom is on her 3rd O'Reilley starter. Lifetime warranty, but you still have to pull it out, take it in, replace. Repeat 2 yeras later.

Rumblefish, I'll call you about your starter.

I bought a cheese ball reman once for a small block chevy from a local crap seller and it had been shaved down so much I had to shim it with fender washers to get the starter drive to engage correctly. After all that trouble it lasted one night. I have bought some starters and alternators from AUTOZONE. The have new not rebuilt stuff available. Don't have any of the trucks anymore so who knows if they still are working.
