In dash Volts gauge pegging intermittently....

Postby aspoonhour » Thu Jan 15, 2009 6:58 pm

I notice the other day that the Volts gauge in the suddenly jumped all the way up...Heater blower went into overdrive, headlights got real bright, blinkers winking faster, etc...Few minutes later the gauge dropped(lights dimmed, etc)...

Would it be safe to assume that the voltage reg is toast or should I be looking at the alternator? It's been doing this on and off for a day or two.

Thanks
Andrew

My 89 did that. It went hard over. It blew my headlights, and popped the caps off the battery. Acid bubbled out. It was great.. New regulator fixed mine. What year is your rig? Only the non i/c trucks had aan external regulator.

Thanks...I figured it might be....Mine is technically a '91 but it is overdriven and intercooled...It does have the V Reg on the firewall...Hmmm...Does that make sense?

I could be wrong when they switched to pcm regulated. Maybe it was 92 and up. As long as you have the regulator on the firewall go for it and replace it.
