On that 79 the orginal wiring had one wire hot when the ignition switch was on. Take that to one field terminal. The regulator will go to the other field terminal. Make sure the regulator has a good ground.
If your using a aftermarket regulator take it back. Hit a junkyard and find an orginal Dodge regulator. Even a used one is better tham most aftermarkets ones are.
