The shiners...

Postby Oddfire » Tue Apr 07, 2009 1:26 pm

This morning when I was on my way home from work my high-beams went from their usual dull flicker to about twice as bright (only for about 1 sec.) and then back to dull. What the heck? Voltage reg. taking a sabbatical on me? My alt. showed about 2 volts of extra effort on the stock gauge the rest of the way home and didn't seem to change (about 2 miles). I would have screwed with it for a while, but tired in a dark driveway in a quiet neighborhood at 4am and a straight piped cummins isn’t the best idea.

The plugs on the back of my headlights will intermittently come loose. When one comes loose it will case the light to kinda flicker until I push it back on. I would check back there for a loose connection first.

Na the dull flicker is there normal operation. The sudden voltage spike that caused the lights to suddenly get extremely bright is what has me concerned. :?

I got a load of hay this morning and almost home, I drove past a lit burn barrel and smelled burnt plastic (got my attension). I looked down at my volt meter to see it paiged at 18+. 11:00am and not even the radio on! I was 1/4 mile frome home so I pulled in the driveway and shut her down, started back up and the gauge behaved. If I would have been thinking, I would have left it running and and chased the problem with a meter to see if the factory guage is screwin with me or not. :;-|:

I changed my mind, I think you need a voltage regulator, before your wiring harness melts down. Some of the regulators have been an issue before, but mine hasn't, so I don't know anything about what the problem is.
