Check engine Light

Postby rocktoy » Tue May 12, 2009 10:57 am

I own a 1993 D350 and had charging issues so I rewired my truck for an external alternator. Now when the truck is running I have a Check Engine Light. I checked the codes and the ECM is faulting the alternator as not cycling properly. I was wondering can I just splice the two wires from the original install together and will this get rid of the light? Or should I just pull the bulb? I would really like to find a way to properly correct this issue and still have the check engine light working properly. Any suggestions?

mine did the same thing. basically the ecm is not seeing voltage changes when the internal regulator sends the signal (it still looks for this even when the internal regulator has died) and assumes that the internal regulator is inop. oddly, now since the leece-neville conversion its gone. the mopar regulators (both internal and external) are subject to lots of small voltage swings in order to maintain proper charging. the leece maintains a slower, more steady voltage curve that apparently doesn't freak out the pcm. all this was a really long way of telling you that you may just have to live with the cel.

Cajun,

Thats what I was figuring. Do you have p/n's for the alt you are talking about or a link for the install.

I remember seeing the Leece-Neville conversion on the STR. One of the professional writer-up guys did it. You know, the nice pictures and narratives.
