Rear running lights not working !

Postby PJ 3 » Tue Jun 16, 2009 3:58 pm

I have no running lights in the rear as well as no lights on my licence plate. My reverse lights, brake and blinkers work fine. :?
Electrical stresses me right out ! :x

Would anyone know where to start looking ? :?

Start at A and go to B. On one of mine I found a wire in the harness that goes to the rear broke. The wire was in the middle of the bundle, no breaks in the loom, no chafe, nothing. just broke like it was cut. Good luck.

Follow the KISS theory. Start with the fuses. Usually if the fuse goes you lose the dash lights too.
I bet the light switch crapped out. ;)

If what PToombs said checks out I would unplug the harness under the dash that goes to the rear and test it there. I think that plug also has the abs wires and fuel sender wires so be careful not to short something out. If that checks good, plug it back in and test the plug at the rear. It will atleast narrow it down.

but they do shut off every now and then when I try the dimmer. If the weather clears this weekend I'm gonna dig into the harness. I may hane a loose connection somewhere because when I did tear the truck apart everything came off !

Pull the light switch and look at the plug. If it's melted, that's the culprit.

I know what you mean about pulling all the wires out while rebuilding it. I pulled it all out too. I was afraid that something would get frigged up but I lucked out. Everything worked. :D

Checked all fuses, grounds, and light switch. It ended up being a cracked wire along the frame behind my fuel tank. Thanks for the imput guy's :thumright:

im in the same boat. new headlight switch and connector, but no taillights or clearance lights on the bed. dash, cab lights, and front marker lights work.

god i love electrical stuff. this goes great with my non-functional gauges.

Sounds like a good time to wire in a relay for the rear lights. ;)

its already got one, and it must be good, as the cab and front marker lights both work yet. im betting on a broke/cut wire somewhere between the relay and wherever the wire splits to go to each rear light.

i swear, this truck has given me more electrical fits than all the other vehicles ive had combined...
