Alternator/AC Failure/

Postby 92CTDin916 » Mon Jul 13, 2009 11:38 am

Hey guys.. been lurking forever and just joined today... I recently just encountered my first major issue with my 17yo dodge =) While driving to the lake on the highway towing my boat with the AC on I noticed it suddenly wasnt blowing cold.. no comp clutch.. I looked down and noticed I was also no longer charging on the volt gauge... So I managed to get to the lake and back on the battery.. got home and verified batt+ to the back of the alt but nothing energizing the fields..I know the regulator is internal to the ECU unit mounted on the drivers fender..I have also been reading about how the crank sensor can cause the ASD relay to not allow the ac clutch and Alt charge... I inspected the crank sensor wiring harness and plug.. no chaffing no broken wires.. air gap at .050... I have a new/chrysler reman ECU on the way.. Was wondering what anybodys thoughts were on this? has anyone had this happen?? All help is greatly appreciated!

What kind of problem did you have with the sensor? was the gap wrong? was it chaffed or did it have any broken wires? Mine is in what appears to be great condidtion.. I have the 8 volt reference comin into the sensor. and the ground.. Did yours fail internally? I'm kinda tearing my hair out over here.. everything checks out and looks good. but it still wont charge...

I guess it was junk inside. I sent it to Philip's house so he could play with it. He found that the signal was not being sent back or it was a real weak signal. I had checked the gap as well as ASD relay before hand. I had no idea what an ASD relay was till Philip pointed me in the right direction.

I put a new ECM in no change in the end it was my CPS I should have read the boards first. Its hanging on the wall in the garage now.

JFYI my crank position sensor looked good from the outside had an internal problem.. Boy was I kinda pissed off at myself..

I had no cruse, a/c or charging..
