You don't "have" to, but I would recommend it. A lot of people have gotten away with not doing it, but then again, a lot of people haven't gotten away with it.

I would do it, cheap assurance.

Go ahead and unhook it. I never do but I am careful where my ground is.

while i can't speak for richie o .......

careful use of your ground would include , if your welding on a quarter panel , the ground is on the quarter panel , NOT on the frame , forcing the electricty through the grounding wires from the body to the frame .... and vice versa

other things that this would include , when welding on lets say a axle tube , you position the ground so the current won't bass through any bearings , possibly fusing the bearings together .

in other words keep the ground in very close proximity , and on the same piece being welded , and you should be fine

Electricity takes the path of least resistance. If that path happens to be through a battery or computer or wires etc, it definitely has potential hurt stuff.

I also grind clean the spot the ground is going onfor a better connection. I never used to unhook the battery to weld. But since I welded on an excavator at work and a week later the PCM went bad, I unhook the battery, computers, throttle activation motors and such.
I can't afford a $2300 computer! ;)
