Truck struggles with A/C?

Postby Bad93Cummins » Tue Sep 08, 2009 12:33 pm

I have a 1993 D250 auto, with the a/c on and the truck in gear the truck will start to bog, the volt meter will go below 8 volts but without a/c the truck is fine. What could be going on? Also the battery and alternator are good, I had them both tested.

Thanks

I'd check the compressor. Either the clutch is shorting out or seizing, or the compressor is seizing.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

You don't think that the 400 foot pounds of torque that the compressor is bolted to has enough power to drive a seizing compressor and make cold air?

Its like the ford escort we had a few years ago. Turn on the ac and it would slow down the car. ( actually not kiddin ) My wife cured that though, hit a hillside, street sign, tree, trailer, then a car. I left it out the window in front of the kitchen sink so she can look at it every day.

Man, you're just a mean SOB! It probably slowed down because she could pedal fast enough. ;)

Thats way to much of a difference. Turn off the truck and see if you can turn the center of the compressor by hand.

That's too low with or with out A/C. Should be about 800 or so. I'd have to check the manual to see exactly how it should be. Might be 750 or 800 in Drive with A/C on.

Well my dad was saying that its about right cause with to much rpm don't want the truck to try to run-away?

My 89 FSM says 700 rpm's with ac on for auto's. 750 for sticks.

Noticed today that with the truck in drive and without a/c it idles at 650rpm.

So I need to adjust the idle?
