The "yearly thread" on the grid heaters cycling. I still can't figure out why this doesn't have a visible sticky of its own own on every Dodge Cummins website.

Freaked me out on my first CTD back in '04.
Called a couple guys before I finally realized it's pretty much typical.
The grids draw a huge amount on the 1st gens, but it also does it on the 2nd gens, even with dual batteries.

I second the motion. I think I've seen this asked on every forum I'm on, with my first cummins I saw someone else's post so I didn't have to ask.
For what it's worth my 04 does it too. I believe the intake air temp needs to be below 50 degrees for the grids to turn on. Once on they will cycle until the intake air temp comes up past the set limit, or once the truck exceeds 20-25 MPH.

Started the hauler the other morning when it was 20 degrees out.
Never thought I'd actually be HAPPY to see the volt guage cycle like that, but it told me all the wiring repairs I did to the harness when putting it together are done right.
That and all of the sensors and controller are working properly. :D

i thought i was a bad regulator or alternator.my 93 takes 5-10 minutes idling in the morning before the thing stays at 14 volts

Had me worried the 1st time it happened to me too. It's a lot more noticeable in the 1st gen's than it is the 2nd or 3rd gens. I guess it's the single battery.
