cold head lights?

Postby Lovemytruck » Wed Dec 02, 2009 9:32 am

This is weird...just moved to Oregon from sunny calif.....and for the last 2 mornings....my head lights don't come on till about 15 minutes of driving.

I know it has to do with the cold....but not sure what the real problem is...perhaps a cold relay isn't clicking on?

After 10-15 min of running the engine...if I flick the lights on and off...they eventually come on.

It only happens when the truck is REALLY cold. Otherwise...no problem..and it doesn't effect the parking lights or brake ligths...only the head lights.

Thanks guys
John

Not quite sure it has to do with the cold. I'm about as electrically inclined as a caveman though, so I can't help you, but Philip seems to be the man to talk to about this stuff.

I live in Alaska, please define REALLY cold for me.

When metal gets cold it shrinks. Check your head light grounds and other electrical connections, they may be getting loose.

I would be pulling the headlight switch and checking the switch and the plug assy.

The terminals on the headlight switch are just riveted into the body. I have seen those rivets work loose and cause problems.

The melted plug for the head light switch is another known problem on these trucks.

Thanks for the info Philip. I had a problem with me headlights the other night. Driving down a country road in the middle of the night and having your headlights shut off is not a fun time. They came back on after 5 seconds or so but I do not want to risk it again so I'm heading out to see if I can find anything suspicious

lovemytruck, what part of oregon?

I had to change my headlight switch, my headlights would shut off while driving because the switch was going bad. I also need to get a relay in there as I am running h4 headlights with 90/130 bulbs
