fuel Level Gauge

Postby lectro_static » Fri Dec 11, 2009 10:16 am

My fuel gauge has not worked since Ive owned my truck, right now I just fill up every 200 miles to be safe. I have no idea whats wrong with it, I checked grounds and it seems good. Is there a common issue with them?

The senders go flaky either because it gets gummed up/dirty and/or loses tension on the arm that holds it against the electrical contact patch in the sending unit.

Probably wore out. I can't believe it would get too gummed up, riding in fuel all day. The contact on the arm rides on some fine wires wrapped around a non conductive piece of stuff. The wires wear, the bushing on the arm gets bad and the arm wobbles off the wires, or it loses tension.

Mine only shows 3/4 tank when I fill it up and it don't run out tell it gets to the "E". What would that be?

ACtually, if you drive it about 300mi, you should be ok dropping the tank. I've done it a few times, and it's easier with an empty tank.

whole lot easier to remove 8 bolts and the bed than to drop a tank, taking a risk on breaking a $30 strap, being a royal pita. I can remove a bed in about 10 minutes tops.

The fuel gauge on my dad's ramcharger is also screwy, the first half of the tank is from above F to F, and the other half is from F to E.
