One of my dash lights quit working...

Postby Jfriedlin » Mon Dec 28, 2009 12:46 pm

I did a search and looked thru a bunch of stuff but couldnt find anything. The dash light for my tem and ammeter gauges quit working, guess they burned out. Has anybody replaced these before, I've never done any on this kind of truck and from putting my stereo some of the components by the stereo are kind of old and brittle. Just wondering how big of a job this is gonna be

Pull the cluster and re-bulb as needed.

The worst part is getting the guage cover past the column, but 2 nuts/washers are all you need to remove to drop it down for clearance, along with the 4 phillips screws on the column trim cover.

Depending on the year, the cluster will be held in with Torx or Phillips screws.
'92-'93 is definitely Torx.

When you remove the holders, they are super tight in the cluster and sometimes require a pair of pliers to get them out.
Bending the outer brass contacts on the holders just a touch, before re-installing them, helps prevent them from losing connection and also keeps them from possibly rattling loose.

The bulb is a glass-wedge type, the number is "194" in the GE (O.E.) line, but is pretty universal in all lines.
