turn signal problem

Postby redneckroot » Wed Jan 13, 2010 7:33 pm

My left turn signal works, however it also is flashing the lights on my dash. If I pull out the headlight switch the turn signal doesn't work at all. The right one works the way it should. Anyone have any ideas?

Do the turn signals self cancel? If not change the switch, if they do look at grounds.

They do self cancel. I'm just trying to make sure I checked all the grounds, there is one on the firewall, and one on the radiator support correct? I also just noticed that if I put the hazards on with the headlights they don;t work either. But without the headlights they work fine.

how old is your headlight switch? Seems to me my lights started acting up then my headlights would turn off by themselves so I changed it and it fixed everything else.

Right before I gave up last night I switched the headlight switch to another one that I had laying around.... It didn't help. Keep the ideas coming because I'm lost right now on what to try next. Thanks.

Bad ground on either the front or rear parking light on the side thats screwed up. ;)
Might be the front side marker too, but I don't think so.

Any idea where all the grounds are? I have the one on the firewall behind the motor, and the one on the radiator support....any others?

Check the bulb fixtures make sure they have good contact and are clean, also check that the housings are grounded to the body good, like theere isnt rust under the nuts etc.

Check your builbs, too. I had a bad bulb in an 84 Mazda do all sorts of funky stuff with the rear lights. I got to looking at it one day, and I swapped bulbs, and all was well. Had I thought of that 6mo earlier......

I thought the self-cancel thing was just a tab on the plastic part? My W350 that went to PA didnt cancel anymore, but it still worked, so I left it. My steering wheel on my W250 sits at a funny angle with the 20:1 2wd box and coupler (long story), so I wish I didnt have the cancel on it- I cant keep a signal on to save my life.

It is just a plastic deal but when they break and are left for long periods of time they can and do cause all kinda of crazyness I had a chevy once that had been broken for 8 or 9 months and the brake lights quit working unless I had a signal on.....

Well I just also discovered not sure how i missed it, but when i put my left turn signal on, all the turn signals blink. So all the turn signals, and interior lights blink when I have the signal on, if i pull out the headlight switch the front side marker light goes out and their is no more blinking. Anyone else have any ideas?

I figured it out. It ended up being a short in the trailer wiring. Wish I would've known this before I tore half the dash apart. Oh well its fixed.
