tach question ?

Postby watson0720 » Thu Feb 18, 2010 6:45 pm

ok i wanna put in a tach, i'm looking at the autometer 3788, that hooks up around the alternator, but it says to adjust at highway rpm, what does that mean, how do you know your highway rpm? Next question, what tach does everyone else use? and where did you install it? where did you order or get it at? ok that was more than two questions but i need to know before i go crazy.....

Well, I will say the same thing Peobryant said on Cummins Forum. I have isspro tachs and they are the only one besides a dealer installed factory option tach that will read the trucks signal. There is no calibration needed for those.

My wife lets me buy what I want for x mas. :D I came home with a Farmall 300 on day and said " Look at your new tractor " ;)

If you do buy an autometer you just need someone with an optical tach to set it for you. Its only a 1 time thing.

Re: tach question ?

I just installed an Autometer 2888 diesel tach. I purchased it from Summit Racing. $120 not including shipping. It was a pretty easy install. I calibrated it using one of those internet RPM calculators. The data I input was the following: gear ratio (3.54:1) running 31 inch tall tires. The info I got back informed me that at 55 MPH with the transmission @ 1:1 (4th gear) I would be turning 2110 RPM. I installed the tach and adjusted it till I got it to read 2110 RPM at 55 while in 4th gear on the getrag. I mounted it right near the cargo light switch. It can easily be seen while driving. I had to make a special little bracket to bring it up in such a way that the steering wheel cross piece wouldn't block it from view. So far so good. I tried to attach photos but apparently they are too big. Will try again.
