Altenator Overcharging 18V

Postby rwatford » Thu Feb 18, 2010 7:24 pm

Ok I know I have a regulator problem. Truck idles at 14V but charges at 18V when you hit the throttle. I swapped for a new regulator (Advance Auto) and it doesn't charge at all. I grind paint from back of regualtor and around screw holes and go get new star washers. Still nothing. Just 11.8V at battery. I swap to the old regulator and again I have 13.8V at idle and creeping to almost 18V if you hold the throttle open. Get another Advance regulator and again not charging. Swap to old regulator and back to 14V-18V. What is going on?

Sounds like a bad batch of Advance regulators. Quite a few guys will buy a used dodge one from a junkyard before they'll buy an aftermarket one. Just better quality.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

You're correct. After work I went and picked one up from NAPA. Bolted it up and presto,... back in business! No more Advance electrical parts.
