All lights flicker

Postby 2001shrtbedcummins » Mon Jun 18, 2007 6:59 pm

Well at idle all the lights flicker as does the voltometer. It doesn't fluctuate as much when it's revved up. What's the deal?

If your truck is a early 91 it will have a voltage regulator mounted on the firewall. Replace it.

But first I would check the body grounds. There is a small wire that comes off the negative battery terminal and goes to the raditor support. Remove this wire from the support and sand the paint from under it. Then reinstall it and see if the flickering stops or slows down.

If cleaning the grounds, etc., doesn't cure the problem, don't just buy any old regulator.

MOPAR makes a blue one, that is meant for old timey muscle-cars.

It costs about thirty bucks; but, it will put an end to the flickering, once and for all.

If it isn't BLUE and doesn't say MOPAR on the housing, it is not the one.

the blue mopar unit is part#p3690731 list price is $25.00. plenty of availability but would take about a week to get here.

this is a constant output regulator that maintains 13.5 volts all the time. only problem is any number that starts with a "p" is a performance part and carries no warranty at all. if you get one thats bad in the box it still cant be warrantied :? . kind of a buy it at you own risk kinda thing  .

I did the cleaning up of the ground on the rad support, stopped my flickering/speedo jumping/temp gauge jumping problems. Thanks Philip!

Hey Phillip, I've got a queshtion for ya. When I fixed the ground all gauges EXCEPT the temp gauge are now correctly reading. What the temp gauge does is: while I'm coasting downhill(no throttle) it reads about right, and the second I touch the fuel pedal it goes back down to it's resting place below freezing. Happens every time I touch the fuel pedal goes to nothing, left off the fuel reads fine???

Any ideas?
