Windshield wipers are dead!

Postby BREEZE1 » Fri Jan 28, 2011 1:59 pm

My windshield wipers have never worked. I couldn't find a blown fuse. Is this a common problem, does anyone have a logical fix?

Check power at the wiper motor. If its getting power, then the motor is junk.

Slow up there Rich. If the motor runs and they don't move, you need wiper linkage bushings. They are a common problem and easily found in the help aisle at the autparts store.

If it gets power but the motor doesn't run, then listen to Mr O

I thought that went without saying, but you are correct. :D

Hey pirates thanks for the input. I checked the motor for power tonight, but I could hear the motor osculating. I’ve never heard it before due to the engine running. I guess I need to find that bushing and where it goes that RumbleFish is talking about.

Look thru the cowl vents, you can see them. If it's the one on the motor, just pull the motor for access. If not, pull the wipers, remove the screws just below the edge of the hood, and gently pull the cowl out. Be careful, you have to unhook the window pisser hoses when you get it partway. That should give you room to get the others.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

That reminds me, I still need to do the wiper bushings on the flatbed. :D
The bushings are available at most auto parts stores, namely at O'Reilly's, in their "HELP!" section.

It's one of the first things I do when I acquire a "new" to me pickup, ever since I got stuck in a downpour with a bad bushing in the Goober. Of course, it was the driver's side wiper; passenger side was wiping just fine.
The newest of these trucks are 18 years old, and most probably have the original bushings.
