Copper ain't Cheap

Postby 2001shrtbedcummins » Sat Jul 28, 2007 7:33 pm

I tell ya what...copper is downright expensive...and I know I took it up the butt. But I really needed to get it done. I went and had a big rig parts store make me up a battery cable to go to the starter...44.95. They charged me like 7 bucks for one of the ends and 6 for the other...I freaked out. But it's fixed now, no more screw in the old clamp and post to make it start. It made me think my battery was dead twice yesterday. But it won't anymore. Anybody else pay this much?

That sounds within reason for quality BIG cable and genuine crimped-on ends, and them doing the work.

You could have bought cable by the foot, and the ends, and made it up yourself, for about half that amount, if you had of shopped around.

You DID??? go with the ring-terminal copper-lugs, rather than the troublesome lead style, didn't you ???

Ring terminals made of copper. The end that goes to the starter is a ring terminal (eye). The lead is crappy and soft, the copper is a better conductor.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

my friggin napa doesn't do cables up anymore or else it would been about that price. They had the little thingy to put the clamp on, the clamp and the wire. But I woulda had to pay the 90 bucks for the clamper...the dousche wouldn't take it outta the box and let me "test" it for a second. Oh well it's fixed and keeps charged now.

Granted, this was about a year ago, but I got BOTH my cables made with rings on both ends for <$30 at the local big rig shop. I may have to do some comparison shopping again, and let y'all know how much it went up. Mom about crapped when I told her the price I paid- she paid $60+ at the dealer for the OEM positive cable.
