74 crew cab to 91 front end

Postby manyholes » Sun Apr 17, 2011 5:31 am

will this work?? i am going to look at a 74 crewcab complete less motor and i want to put it on my 90 chassis, with my 91 front end. the 91 is a 2door ex cab, doors are good. what would i have to pull from the 90/91 cab to make it work with the 74 or is the trouble not worth it and should i look for a newer cab??? its going for 1300 complete with dana 60 front, figuring i can get it for a grand. let me know your opinions thanks.

the cab on the 90 is scrap on a good day, along with the doors, only thing im looking to salvage off it is the dash gauges and clusters.

how hard is it to swap the dash's out??

Swaping the dash inst hard and you will need the front doors off a newer truck.

youll need to pull the windsheild to get the dashes out. but its worth it imo, i hate the 70's dash. and like said, youll need to swap the doors to match the fenders. but its all bolt in stuff, easy but a bit time consuming.

It's worth pulling the windshield just to see if there is any hiden rust issues.

and when i pull the dash from the 90, keep the wirring harness for that truck and just modify as needed or do i work off of the 74??s
i think the 90 would be the one i would want to use, does painless offer a wirring kit for these trucks so i wouldnt have to worry about 20 year old wiring??

Rear doors will match. Keep the 90's wiring harness as well.

ok, thanks for the help guys. im going to look at the truck thursday morning as im still up north right now in the bush, and hopefully be hauling it home fri or sunday, it doesnt have windshield in it so it will be easier to check for rot, its sitting in a guys field right now, the snow has just melted so atleast i can get around the truck to check it out .
with the 74 CC , what is some options for new seating for the truck ?? the current ones are shot in the CC and the front in my 90 aint too bad but wouldnt mind upgrading to something with a split bench/console and adjustable backs. should i be able to pull seats out of any of the newer trucks to go in (gm/ford/dodge) or ??? anyone have a measurement of the max width we can go for front and rear seats so i can do some shopping while im up north off the net. as always all this help is apreciated

ive got a 08 dodge 3/4 cc for a company truck and hate these seats, ideally i would like to throw in the leather benches from a ford HD edition with heat, i know those seats are comfy as hell, i didnt mind 2nd gens dodges either.
whats your guys opinions. i can get a measurement of the HD seats up here, a guy at work has one of those trucks. anyone with the cab measurements would be apreciated

info learned by Gayle and I,
putting a cummins in a 73 crew from a 92 donor

the 90 front cab mounts are 2" wider (measured side to side than the 73)
the dash mounts are way different, doesn't screw to the lower windshild frame like the 73
seat mount brackets are for flat floor vs 90's raised floor
main bulkhead for wires also different
A/c and heater is in different location

All is do-able, We found it easier to just put the floor and firewall from the 92 into the 73...

iirc all the crew front seats are different. They have a different base, and a reg cab front seat will bolt into the rear.

I've been wanting a way to put a '70's grille on my '89 for a long time. haha I've always loved the look of the Power Wagons. Probably my favorite combo of anything would be about a '78 Power Wagon cummins conversion, with a late-80's dash and 2nd gen seats.
'89 D350 - Denny T Stage II, 366 GSK, HX-35, Powerstroke IC, Power Screw 1/2 turn from runaway, 2nd gen seats, 35% tint, Sony Head Unit, 4" Exhaust, Replaced everything replaceable.
