A/C Question

Postby 91cumminsd250 » Thu Jun 02, 2011 1:47 pm

Is it normal when you turn the ac on to hear a tick and then a noticeable rpm drop? I've had a newer vehicle before and I could never notice anything when I turned it on. Also, when I turn on the defroster it kicks on the compressor because it does the same thing.

Depending on how loud the click is, it sounds pretty normal to me.

The click will be the sound of the compressor clutch engaging, and the RPM drop is just the load from pumping the refrigerant. I'd say you don't notice them on new cars due to the increased soundproofing and idle-up software.

I'll second that. And yes, it's normal for the compressor to run when you turn on he defrost. Helps dry the air you blow onto the windshield. Of course, of the 7 81-93 style dodges I've had equipped with ac, only one has worked. That reminds me, I need to diagnose my rc's air non-conditioning...

I've also heard that the compressor is set to run with the defroster so the refrigerant will get cycled through the winter months.
