LOOOOONG box

Postby TRENDZ » Mon Sep 19, 2011 7:16 pm

I've been dabbling with this truck for about a year now. I'm in the final stages of assembly. The truck is a early 91 that has had a basic overhaul, and more than a few custom things. Anyway, the truck is a 159'' wheelbase cab/chassis frame. I decided to lengthen the bed instead of shorting the frame or adding something in the 27+ inches of extra truck. Anyway, after much indecision over what to do, I ended up chopping up a real nice bed I found locally on c/l for a real deal of $400. The 27 inches of length added was all fabricated sheetmetal, so I didn't have to cut up two beds. Being a cab/chassis, the axle width is a bit to narrow for tire clearance inside the wheel well. I had to move the inner walls of the wheel houses inward. I still have 48 1/2" inches of floor between the wheel wells, so I can still get a 4'x8' (ooops I mean 4'x10' )sheet of drywall in there in one piece. The fender flares are made of part of the factory wheel openings and some fabbed sheetmetal. Not quite the factory look at all, but it was a good way to fill some missing space in the outer skin of the box. As goofy as it looks, I think the factory style fenders would have made the box appear even longer, and more accurate bodywork would have needed to be done on the bed side. The factory fenders also would have been to wide as the axle being 5 inches narrower. Anyway, I'll try to post a pic.

Sharp truck and impressive fab work!

Got any plans to make it turn sharper? I'd say you'll need it. :P

Nice work, not the look I would care for on the fenders, though, too "Ford-ish".
I do like the use of the old bedsides for the wheel radius and body line, which is a nice touch.

If you like it, that's all that matters.

Mark.

more... Oh, I dont think I mentioned what the cut outs in the lower end are for. I'm making stainless steps/ fender bash gaurds. They will be connected to the frame to prevent the innevedable fender damage that is likely to occur.
